Poorly

Sumo's overdone it.

He couldn't stand up this morning, which was obviously a big worry. Managed to get him up the ramp in his harness with a towel supporting his hips, but he just collapsed when we got ashore, and his muscles were trembling from all the exertion. Took him back on board and made him comfortable, while I called out a vet. Mr Stuart of the Abivale pet hospital was absolutely brilliant. Within an hour, he managed to drive almost to the boat, and made a tremendous fuss of Sumo while he examined him thoroughly.

5 minutes after administering a big dose of Metacam, Sumo was able to stand up, and the vet carried him off of the boat, so that he could have a pee. Brought him back onboard, where he had a big drink and conked out. Verdict is that he's probably just overdone it. Short walks, and more Metacam in his food for the next few days.

  1. Poor Sumo! Hope he feels better soon. Oscar has been on Metacam for years, we are sure its what keeps him going at 14.5! He looks so sorry for himself in the picture.

  2. Thanks for that. He's a lot happier now that the metacam has kicked in. Not too happy that he has to wear his ruff wear harness to go outside. But his appetite is good and he's currently hogging the fire in the kingseat, as usual.

  6. Hi People. thanks for the messages. He appears to be back to his old self, but we are not taking any chances until the metacam is finished. Short walks, and no running around like an idiot for a while. He's walking about and climbing on and off the couch OK. So we are very thankful.

    Cheers...

  8. Hi Lesley. Sumo is 8 now. The vet gave his hips a good listen, and he didn't think it was that. His hips are a bit loose, but not to a worrying or abnormal degree. He was up on his feet five minutes after first metacam, so the verdict was that he'd stressed his back left leg. Anna (nb Grace), a vetinary nurse also scanned him with her thermal imaging camera, and it doesn't look like arthritis. He seems fine now, off of the metacam, and gradually building up the exercise levels.
